TORO has been covering the beautiful and talented women of the world for years. For all the guys who feel left out, we celebrate all that can be done by the stronger, dumber sex.

SAMUEL L. JACKSON, BAD MOTHERFUCKER

Quentin Tarantino has dodged controversy for his use of the word ‘nigger’ in his dialogue since Reservoir Dogs, but with latest picture Django Unchained, it finally serves a contextual purpose. It’s ironic that the slavery-era set movie has reignited the debate considering that, while the use of the expletive is particularly rampant, it more or less accurately reflects the attitude of the time period.

How can white commentators have a debate over a hateful word if they keep giving that word its power by refusing event to speak it under any circumstance? That seemed to be the point made by Django actor and frequent Tarantino collaborator Samuel L. Jackson in a recent interview with Houston critic Jake Hamilton. It’s a tense exchange to say the least.

Thanks to Jackson for making the first great viral clip of 2013.

TWO ANONYMOUS GUYS, GOOD SAMARITANS

While the debate on gun ownership often focuses on a victim’s right to defend themselves, the question of intervention comes up less often. How many robberies are prevented by the sudden appearance of a third party, and how would more prevalent gun ownership effect this?

None of that went through the minds of two anonymous good samaritans, who helped stop a violent street robbery this past week in Cincinnat,i and had their deed captured on video. It’s not the kind of thing that should be done without thought, but as it appeared the victim was in serious distress, the men’s instincts took over.

It's nothing much more than human interest news story, perhaps, but one that should be told far more often.

J.J. ABRAMS, FRIEND TO A FAN

By modern movie standards it’s taken an unusually long time for J.J. Abrams to follow up his surprisingly great Star Trek reboot. With the awfully titled Star Trek Into Darkness less than six months from release and a few full trailers already provided, we still know next-to-nothing about the film’s plot.

But at least one fan has already seen the entire movie, thanks to the usually secretive Abrams and an unusual Reddit request. The family of a cancer patient, known only as Dan, put up the plea less than two weeks ago and, according to reports, the entire family has been given one last night out at the movies.
