AN 18TH CENTURY FRENCHMAN AND THE UNUSUAL ORIGINS OF THE GAME OF ROULETTE

To novice players, Roulette seems like a simple game of chance, but this is a common misconception. Playing Roulette takes more than luck - this mainstay of casinos worldwide conceals its elegant complexity beneath its spinning wheel and checkered board.

Few can claim to have truly mastered this game of skill, patience and, yes, an element of chance. The question is whether you have what it takes to win at this old-skool casino game that, when it comes down to it, is a truly classic game.

PLACE YOUR BETS

Roulette, meaning ‘little wheel’ in French, was created towards the end of the 18th century by Frenchman Blaise Pascal who was searching for a perpetual motion machine. He blended popular English wheel-based games with Italian board games and an existing French board game to create one of the most challenging games in modern casinos. In fact, Pascal’s initial roulette wheel stayed exactly as he invented it for years – until 1842, when brothers Francois and Lois Blanc revolutionized the wheel by adding a zero to it. This shook the game up considerably, as it suddenly gave the house a massive edge.

The Roulette table comprises an iconic spinning wheel and checkered table layout. Players can place their bets on a specific number on the wheel or a range of “pockets” based on how close they are to the winning number on the layout table.

You can place bets up until the time the dealer announces “No more bets” or, more classically, “Rien ne va plus” (which means “Nothing goes” in French). Usually, this means players can place bets before the ball starts dropping and perhaps even while the wheel is still in motion.

CHIPS.jpgPlayers bet by placing their chips on the numbers on the table that they believe will bring them luck. Once the ball settles in the wheel, the dealer places a marker on the winning square on the table and sweeps away all losing bets either by hand or using a rake (you probably saw the rake in action in more than one gambling movie).

Seeing your chips being swept away can be a cruel reminder that you simply weren’t up to the challenge in that game and lesser men have quickly been crushed by the pressure that mounts before each spin and the empty defeat when their chips are taken from them.

ELEGANT COMPLEXITY

Winning may seem entirely a function of luck and whichever supernatural influences you may believe it but beneath its elegant surface lies a complex game of probabilities and mathematics.

Roulette tends to favor the house but don’t let that deter you. Besides rules like En prison rules that reduce the inherent house advantage, players with a keep analytical mind can, with experience and perseverance, begin to grasp the mathematical mechanics and probabilities and gain the upper hand over the house. Now and then.

READY TO PLAY THIS CLASSIC GAME?

Fortunately, it isn’t difficult to begin playing Roulette. One of the more popular betting strategies is to bet on either red or black. The odds of success are even so if you bet on the winning color you can expect to win the equivalent of your earnings.

This betting strategy also means that your possible upside is limited. It’s a safer option for the more timid players but bolder men take bigger risks even though they know they could lose it all in a single wager.

This is why Roulette is a truly classic game. The risk can be high, very high but so are the potential rewards. The odds are that you will lose more often that you will win so leaving that table a winner requires a well-thought out strategy and nerves of steel.

Think you have what it takes to play Roulette?
