When it comes to sunglass trends for spring/summer 2013, think pushing the envelope. We're not talking about straying too far from the classics but Top Gun did hit theatres almost 30 years ago, so why settle for plain old aviators when you can have something a little more modern?

The good folks at Karir Eyewear have been traversing the globe for decades to bring the latest trends to Canada. TORO caught up with Namita Karir, general manager of Karir's Yorkdale Mall location in Toronto, to talk about what's hot for the season.

"Men are still fairly conservative when it comes to frames but we are seeing eyewear as more of an accessory for men now," says Karir. "We're beyond basic black and are seeing a lot more in terms of details."

While matte frames are still the most popular, Karir is seeing more bi-colour plastics, gradients and mixed materials — even crystals. Tortoiseshell is popping up everywhere, like in Matsuda's 3023 frames [pictured above, $550.00], made popular by Tony Stark in this year's blockbuster hit Iron Man 3.

"We're seeing rounder shapes, more curves and slightly larger frames as we move away from that retro square look," says Karir.

And, of course, the classic aviator is still a jumping off point for many eyewear designers. Though, Karir notes, as with pq Eyewear's Tottenham frames [$795.00], we're seeing new architectural details.

Says Karir: "Aviators aren't going anywhere."

And why should they?
