7 THINGS YOU NEED FOR A ROAD TRIP

Road trips are a fantastic adventure, no matter where you go. Here in Canada, it's the perfect time to enjoy the fall colours. But if you happen to travel to other parts of the world, a road trip in the UK offers endless possiblities with plenty of gorgeous scenery once you leave the cities and head out into one of the many beautiful National Parks. So what do you need to take with you to guarantee an enjoyable road trip in the UK?

LEGAL DOCUMENTS

Assuming you have passed your driving test – and if you are still learning, check out the mock theory tests at toptests.co.uk – make sure you take your driver’s licence. You will also need your registration document and a copy of your motor insurance certificate when you go on a road trip. That way, if you are stopped by the police for any reason, there will be no unnecessary delays.

One thing to remember is that if you are heading over to the continent for a longer road trip, make sure you notify your insurance company, or you might not be covered.

BREAKDOWN COVER

Nobody likes to think their trusty car will break down, but sadly these things can and do happen – usually at the most inopportune moment. However, as long as you have breakdown cover, you should be fine. Basic breakdown cover will get you to the nearest garage, but consider paying a bit extra for full cover if your car is unreliable. That way you can get home for free.

FIRST AID KIT

Always carry a first aid kit in your glove box. You never know when you might need a sticking plaster or an emergency dose of Imodium. Better safe than sorry.

A FUN TRAVEL COMPANION

Road trips are much more fun if you have someone to share the experience with. You can document your trip on social media, but it’s not the same as having someone to talk to, share a joke with, or share the expense of fuel. However, pick your road trip companion carefully, or you could live to regret asking them along for the ride.

SNACKS AND DRINKS

Buying snacks and drinks from motorway service stations is expensive. Save yourself some cash by packing a bag of snacks and drinks for the journey.

A ROAD TRIP PLAYLIST

Prepare a road trip playlist before you set off on your journey. Connect your iPod or smartphone to the car and listen to your favourite tunes as you head off down the road. Think power ballads and the Beach Boys; or whatever else floats your boat.

A PICNIC BLANKET

A thick blanket is very useful for impromptu picnics in scenic locations. Imagine how much fun it will be if you pick up some fish & chips, head to the nearest beach, and tuck in. You and the seagulls will be in seventh heaven.

The great thing about road trips is that you are free to venture off your pre-prepared route if you spot something interesting. So don’t be a slave to the sat-nav. If you see an interesting place name on a sign, go and explore!
