O CANADA: THE FINAL FRONTIER
MarcGarneauA_crop.jpg

As we salute Canadian greatness (how un-Canadian) leading up to our nation's birthday, we shift to the final frontier. NASA shuttles were beholden to the Canadarm, yes, but also to the astronauts who manned them. Joseph Jean-Pierre Marc Garneau became the first Canadian in space when he, along with six other crew members, flew on the shuttle Challenger STS-41-G from October 5 to 13, 1984 as payload specialist. After serving as president of the Canadian Space Agency, he joined the political arena and is being mentioned as a potential Liberal leader (because it might just take rocket science to resurrect the floundering party).
