Sir Wilfrid Laurier — Canada's first Francophone prime minister — holds the distinction for the longest unbroken term of office as prime minister, a post he held from 1896-1911. Laurier was a champion of national unity, he opposed British encroachment on Canadian automony and he was against conscription. He was finally swept out of office in a landslide after negotiating an unpopular reciprocity treaty with the U.S. Here are more images of Canada's leaders from the past 100 years as seen in The New York Times.
