PHOTO OF THE DAY

This image, published in The New York Times on September 14, 1980, shows Terry Fox "before he was forced to halt his marathon across Canada." Fox, who lost his leg and later his life to cancer, inspired a nation during his Marathon of Hope. The disease forced him to abandon his quest after 143 days and 5,373 kilometres. Now, every Sunday after Labour Day, thousands gather across Canada to run in his name. To date, Terry Fox Runs have raised more than $500 million to support cancer research.
