Newfoundland's fish have long been a lure, John Cabot's crew reporting after a 1497 voyage that "the sea there is full of fish that can be taken not only with nets but with fishing-baskets." Here we see a man with his catch in an image taken in a village outside of St. John's on June 14, 1932 that was published in the "Resorts" column of The New York Times, enticing American outdoorsmen. These days, Newfoundland and Labrador, with its magnificent coastline and abundance of inland lakes and pristine rivers, still boasts some of the best fishing in Canada with wild Atlantic salmon, trophy brook trout, large Arctic char and more.
