More TORO WOMAN
DOUBLE TROUBLE

What do you have against sexy blonde twins? These are the kind of complex editorial issues we wrestle with daily here in the TORO Woman department. In this case, it was a short debate – especially when the sexy blonde twins in questions are Juno-nominated sisters like Carmen and Camille. After all, if TORO stands for anything, it’s family values.

“We’ve been doing this our whole lives,” says Carmen. “We sang together in a church choir when we were young and our families have always been musical – our dad plays guitar, our mom used to be a singer – so our parents were very much enthusiastic and supportive.”

“Which is cool,” Camille chimes in. “Because I know so many kids whose parents are musicians and they tell them, ‘Why don’t you get a real job?’ So that’s not one of the challenges that we face.”

Camille is asked about the challenges they do face.

“Well, our dad is our manager,” she laughs. “So we’ve had to work out a nice business/family relationship. It’s taken years, but now we’re good.”

Carmen and Camille have performed everywhere from Glasgow to Dubai, have had a top 40 single, and much more is in the works. But it wasn’t always so easy. After high school, each went their separate way: Camille to music school, Carmen to study broadcast journalism, and music was bumped to weekends. Things changed after they sent homemade demos to record companies in New York. The music executives liked what they heard and the girls were flown in to play live.

“We hadn’t performed under that kind of pressure before,” Carmen recalls. “And we didn’t have any management at the time, so we were there all by ourselves. It was super stressful.”

Those early stresses have given way to a successful career, with a busy slate of touring, recording, and several songs from their first album appearing on MTV’s The Hills. But do they ever worry the rapid show biz success is too much too soon?

“We were raised Mormon and we learned how to harmonize in the church choir – so that’s our foundation,” Camille says. “But now? Yeah, we’re church girls gone bad.”

Sounds good to us.
